If you've done all the above and your external drive still isn't found, i found this on another website that worked for me... should work for all of you too :) Just do what you see below, go into time machine and click 'select disk' and it should be there!

In a call to Apple Airport support, I was told that every time I brought up my MacBook Pro running 10.5.2, if I wanted my external disk, which is directly attached to my Airport Extreme router through a USB port, to show on my desktop as an icon, I would have to go through the following procedure: Finder > Shared/Apple Airport > external disk name (file folder icon) > close window and the icon will appear on the desk top.

I am having the same problem as Jim was/is (post 15 May 2009). I have OS X 10.6.2 Macbook Pro. External 500GB Lacie plugged straight into my AE. I formatted my disk in the 'journaled' format as you suggested. Any new insights?

Thanks

Hi Jim,

I am not sure I have an immediate solution to your problem. I am fairly positive that USB hubs are not supported, but as you pointed out, you don't use that every time. Also, I don't think that's the problem. It's possible that not all disks are supported, although I can't explain why. It's also possible that you might need to reformat your disk in a format that the AEB recognizes. I know that the "Journaled" option works, but I am not sure about the others. Does any of that help?

Grant:

I am running Mac OS 10.5.7 on an iMac7,1 (Intel cored duo 2), the HD is a 1T WD My Book and a Belkin USB hub.

What if Time Machine (or a computer) can't find the disk when it is connected to the base station to begin with? This is my real problem, when it is plugged into the AE base station a computer can't see it (I've tried 3), even after following your instructions. I have tried reconfiguring the AE base station. The HD doesn't show up even when it is connected directly to the AE (as opposed to the AE through the hub), but there is no problem with a printer being accessible through either method of connection. Plug the HD directly into the computer and it is pops right up on the desktop, either with a USB or firewire connection. IF and only if I use the "connect to server" command and use the AE's IP address can Time Machine see the HD. But this connection method doesn't allow automatic backups, at least I haven't figured out how to do that, so it doesn't appear to be a solution.

Any suggestions you could provide would be appreciated because I haven't been able to find anything on this specific problem.

Thank you.

Only change to your instructions was I had to re-choose the time machine disk both when I attached it to USB, and then again when I attached it back to my AEBS. Otherwise, perfect! Thanks!

Awesome man... thanks so much for the great tutorial. Worked perfect and I now have a better understanding of the differences between NAS backups and Local drive backups!

Cheers.
