20 Life lessons learned from Mario games

By Jaems • Feb 27th, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

Having recently purchased a WII, I have had the chance to get back in touch with some long forgotten Mario games.  I bought a used console, and the person who had it before me had already downloaded some of the most popular retro games for the Virtual Console: specifically Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario World.  I also purchased Super Mario Sunshine and received Galaxy from my wife for Christmas.  In addition, I downloaded the Lost Levels, and played through most of Mario 64 recently.  This presented a unique opportunity to compare and contrast the games through time, and this is what I learned.

Life lessons learned from Mario games.
  1. It’s possible that you can find a shortcut, but you’ll have more fun if you go the scenic route.
  2. If you fail at the end, remember that you have the ability to get there again.
  3. If you feel small and insignificant, then remember that even this will give you greater flexibility.
  4. Sometimes you may feel like you can conquer the world, but remember to stay grounded and work systematically.
  5. Improvisation can be good, but it’s best to always have a backup plan.
  6. Try to resist the urge to find the answers online, the rewards are greater when you find them on your own.
  7. Sometimes even your brother can’t help you.
  8. Don’t let the bad guys get the upper hand.  If all else fails, run.
  9. Sometimes life requires you to carry your enemies.
  10. If you can’t run, then don’t try jumping.
  11. A vine doesn’t grow if you can stand on it.
  12. Not all pipes can be investigated.
  13. Not all mushrooms are good for you.
  14. Choose your treasure wisely: its contents may help you on your way.
  15. Gambling may get you more cash, but it’s not a very reliable method.
  16. Even your archenemies can be used for good, but you may have to throw them first.
  17. If you’ve forgotten the plot, then it’s probably not worth remembering anyway.
  18. Sometimes it’s not up to you – the world just scrolls on by.
  19. Learn how to manage your time.
  20. It’s not over unless you sell your system for cash.
