Key Display for Max/MSP: Displays real name of pressed keys, including named keys such as Tab and Enter

By Jaems • May 19th, 2009 • Category: Software

This patch allows you to display the real name of user-entered key presses. Instead of ASCII value or Key Code, you can choose to display the real name of the key. This patch solves the problem of keys requiring names such as Tab, Enter, Space, Return, Delete, Page Down, Page Up, all the arrow keys and Escape. You can easily modify the patch to suit your needs. The patch uses ASCII values that should be standard on all Macintosh keyboards but if you find an exception, especially for the named keys (such as Tab and Enter), I would be interested in knowing. The idea for this patch came from my wife, for whom I was showing one of my applications in progress that was using Key Codes for display and user entry. She promptly commented: “That means nothing to me”.  I then realized that using Key Codes would be useless, even for people who understood what they were, and thus I got the idea for Key Display.

Key Display is packaged and ready for your Extras folder. You can send values anywhere, but the text button display is the default.
