If you own a consumer grade Hard Disk camera such as the JVC Everio Hybrid, you may be happy to know that the MPEG-2 format is now supported by QuickTime Pro through a simple download. [GO THERE] That being said, you can’t play the .mod files from the JVC and get sound playback by using the QT player alone.  I was one of the unfortunate saps who spent 20$ on this add-on, without seeing the fine print:

“Note that the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component will not demux audio and video, nor will it enable audio transcoding.”

OOOPS!  That means, you can’t use it to playback the .mod / .moi files that the JVC produces.  However, all is not lost. If you combine the commercial QuickTime MPEG-2 add-on with the following bit of freeware, you will have complete control over the JVC camera (or others that use MP2).  You don’t even need to batch rename the suffixes of the files, or any of that nonsense that you see mentioned on other help sites.

Solution: Squared 5 MPEG Streamclip: video converter for Mac & Windows.  This puppy will open your JVC files with absolutely no problem, and export them into any format.  It’s trouble free, easy to use, effective and doesn’t require adding a bunch of codecs n’ stuff. You can download it here.

Exporting to QuickTime is a snap, offering you loads of options, but the factory preset will make a .mov file that is high quality, and instantly playable. You will need the Quick Time Mpeg-2 player in order for this to function with MP2 files.
