Top 20 coolest words approved by Safari’s spellchecker

By • Dec 3rd, 2009 • Category: Uncategorized

This is a post inspired by a status update in Facebook. I think it’s nice that Safari lets us get away with so many great new words – most of them reflections of the digital age. Kudos to Apple for the coolest spellchecker around! (if it could just learn not to turn itself off for no reason, it would be perfect). At first I had lots of funny hyphenated words until I realized that the checker allows all hyphenated words. So you won’t get checked for interesting words like sewage-bottle. Another example is the number followed by word collection. Words like 4wheel are allowed (and included in the list), but so are words like 5lobotomy. I chose to keep 4wheel though, even though it bends the rules slightly.

Now on to my list:

1) uploader
2) spellchecked
3) releasability
4) downloadable
5) prerelease
6) funkadelic
7) downloader
8) DJ’ing
9) interfacing
10) customizability
11) emailing
12) hardcoded
13) categorizable
14) compilable
14) sawtoothed
15) whizzbang
16) SMS’ed *
17) antiglare
18) repartitioned
19) 4wheel
20) followthrough

* To people who have a problem with the comma of separation: that’s been accepted in major English grammar books for the last 50 years. It’s used to separate short acronyms from the following suffix, so that the acronym and suffix don’t run together and create things like “I smsed him” or “She learned her abcs”. Those two “words”, incidentally, are not allowed by the spellchecker!
