The games are a cruel business. One minute you pwn the high score list, next minute you are barely even on it anymore.

This is arguably one of my favorite youtube videos of all time, and most certainly cbernz' favorite. There are so many levels. First, it sounds like ass. But it doesn't stop there. They try to fix it. There is one guy in charge telling them how to tune. But they can't tune. One guy can't keep from busting up completely every time they get to the part where it sounds worst. The bass player takes it all very seriously but can't focus because of the guy sitting next to him. The soprano player is just a littttle better than everyone else, so he takes it upon himself to be "director" and tries to sing them in.

WakeBurner claimed the board in BricksBreaking II for a sweeping win in June 2008's game of the month. Congratulations to him! There was competition from Jane in the beginning of the month, but Wake stormed ahead for his fifth victory in the games overall. Good Job!

Next month's game is displayed on the games page.

Last weeks "Game of the month" was Crazy taxi, and the winning high score from last time remained unbeaten, even by the record holder. I debated how to handle that, since there isn't any precedent for that. My decision was to give a medal but not a unique award, since an award was already given for that score. In other words, WakeBurner now has a "two" medal due to his ability to remain at the number one place for this past week.

In addition, the games will now be monthly. The game for the month of June is
Jumping Arrows. Congratulations to WakeBurner and good luck for the month of June!

As always, information for the site game contest can be found here and is referenced through the games page.

Making a Quiz or Test at Gotoquiz.com

> When you start making your quiz, if it is a personal quiz that isn't general knowledge, you should click "This quiz is about me". Then I think it is hidden from the general quiz list.

> Lots of the items have a minimum requirement for characters so you are actually punished for not being verbose. Imagine that!

> There is a minimum number of individual questions for a quiz. There has to be at least 10 questions, not including age and gender (meaning 12 questions in all). Until you post 10 questions, you won't see the "finish quiz" link. This had me stumped for about 10 minutes. But then again, I am a moron.

> Age and gender can be used as a factor for your quiz results. You will be presented with a dialogue where you can choose this.

>The difference between a quiz and a test:
A quiz is something that has no right or wrong answers. It is used to put your quiz-takers in a certain category or spectrum.
Example: What kind of vegetable are you?
Result: You are more of a carrot than a cucumber

A test has a right answer and a wrong answer and will give you a percent score:
Example: Test your knowledge of South Park Trivia
Result: You got 85% correct.

> Edit and spell check your questions and paragraphs while you are writing the test or quiz. Doing it later is a pain and in come cases not even possible. Recently, I couldn't access the edit to the result paragraphs for a quiz I made. Also, if you make a quiz and then finalize it you can't go back and fix it. This stinks for someone like me who likes to work like that. The result is that some questions can be missing an answer or can contain a repeat answer. This is just one of the drawbacks of this site. The advantage of this site is that you don't need to register or any other nonsense. It is come and go, easy to use.

Well I am not even sure if cbernz could even beat his own high score this week in The Post Office, but considering that he owned the board with his 73,000 point score and nobody could even come close, I think he fully earned his medal and his 1960s 23-Window Mail-Spewing Bus viewable here.

I am very happy with the way the games are going. They seem to get lots of attention and they keep people engaged and interested. Let's get out our ergonomic keyboards because next week it's all about The Typing of the Ghosts. Enjoy! And congratulations again cbernz on his first win!

Poll: Bullshit Is Most Important Issue For 2008 Voters
Topic: Election in Denmark - YES
Election in Denmark - YES [message #4082] Wed, 24 October 2007 22:04
Guest  Denmark
I can hardly believe it. Since I heard the first
rumours, I have waited and waited for the election.
And I cross my fingers, that the social democratic
will win, and we will get a new primeminister and
other new ministers, who dares to admit, that there
is no point in lowering the taxes and at the same
time promise a better welfaresystem. The money has
to come from somewhere, and i feel,I have
to vomit, when I listen to Anders Fogh and his
talk about our great welfaresystem. It's only on the
surface. If you go deeper, the welfare has become
worse and worse as time passes, since he and his
ministers got elected. I have have been a public
worker for quite some years. I have followed how the
schools gets worse and worse, because they had to
save money. It's disgusting. I have seen so many lost
kids, because they had to save money. Money for who?
For the rich so they can get richer.
Yesterday, I visited the school, where I have worked
for 3,5 years. They have to make so many savings, so
there would not be job for me after the summerholiday.
Even though that I was needed, because of all the kids
with special needs. So now I needed a refence, so I
can work on different schools as a substitute teacher..
My manager asked me, if I was interested in 10 lessons.
Because he had a 15 year old boy, who has not attended
school for 1,5 years. And I was like what??? He had
become lost in the system. I mean, this is Denmark.
A really small country, which is so proud of it's
welfaresystem. And this is not the first time. But
the other times it has only been 6 month. But since
the law says, that all kids from the first to the
ninth grade has to receive at least 10 lessons per
week, then it is the duty of my manager to make
sure, it happens. And this is a boy, who has serious
problems with other kids, so I have to teach him in
his home. And I am sure there is something he is
good at. Maybe something with his hands or whatever.
But oh no. He must be treated like everybody else.
Even though he will feel defeated again and again.
When my father was a child, it was possible to leave
shcool after 7. grade. And I mean people are different.
Thank God. And we have different talents. But the
public schools in Denmark try to make all the pupils
following the same path. It is a direct message from
the ministry. I can give an example.
I was on duty during the written examinations this
spring. One of them was in german. 3 boys, who has
not had german classes, because danish grammar is too
difficult for them, they had to be there and do
their best, because the ministry says so. I will
never forget the looks in their eyes. They felt so
stupid, like really dumb. It was written all over
their face. When I received their papers, they were
blank with only their name on. And of course they
had to make some trouble later to make it up for
their stupidity in class, which they have just been
forced to face. In stead of pounting out, what they
are good at. I mean, it all goes together, and trouble
does not come out of nothing. And a lot of these kids
are weighed down by their social inheritance, but
the ministry do not give these kids a chance to
break it, because they do not know, what it is like.
They chased their career, and they think, that
everybody should do the same, they just have to put
themselves together. It is just the same, when people
have a depression. If they haven't tried it, they
say: Do something. Put yourself together. I have heard
that from too many people, and every time, they are
people, who only sees the world in boxes, and people,
who has not been down themselves, so they know, what
it is like.
My conclusion is: This election can change a lot. I
will cross my fingers and hope, that God will listen
this time. He should do it for the kids, the homeless
and all the other people, who needs it!

I have been spending the last couple of months looking at integrated chat options and shoutboxes that can be added to websites. I hope that someone can benefit from what I have learned.

Here is a partial list of chat options that are currently available.

Chats:

Parachat: www.parachat.com
A very attractive solution for a chat that functions more like IRC. Users can create their own rooms and log in and register from an integrated menu. Chat is lightning fast and easy to use. I was taken aback by the very steep price and the fact that private windows and tabs didn't seem to open a new chat window. in other words, if you were chatting in the lobby and went to make your own room, you saw both chats in the same window and the only difference was the item you selected. Very confusing. Their free version is a stripped down version of the professional versions, but with unintrusive ads and a linkback.

Conclusion: Too expensive considering it is just a customized version of IRC chat with user limits. Get yourself an IRC room and configure a java chat. It takes some learning, but you will have saved yourself 547 Dollars a year!
____________________

Gabbly: http://home.gabbly.com
A free chat window that floats above your website. It is free and doesn't seem to offer a chance to pay for an upgraded version. That means that all chatters are faced with a graphic ad when they begin chatting. Chat interface is ugly and clunky, and looks like a bad dream mixed with Windows XP. This chat is fine if you want to support Adult Friend finder and other commercial nonsense.

Conclusion: Don't bother.
____________________

PJIRC: http://www.pjirc.com
A completely free option that will give you the most flexibility. Users can register names, create rooms, browse channel lists, send smilies, popup windows and do a million other things. The drawback is that it requires tweaking and setup. PJIRC won't run on its own, rather you will need to have your own IRC chatroom to interface with it. Setting up an IRC chatroom is something anyone can do. Find a server, register a nickname, join a room, register the room. Then you configure PJIRC to log into that server and room. Google "IRC servers" to find a good server.

This is all a fairly time consuming process, but can be accomplished with a few cups of coffee and the online manuals and info.

Conclusion: The cheapest and best option but requires more work. PJIRC doesn't have its own advanced login page, so you need to download the addon. This is a bit irritating as it is yet one more thing to configure. Tweaking the addon login page is a pain, since everything is surrounded by lines and lines of code.
____________________

Shouts:

The main consideration here is if you want to choose the do-it-yourself option or the have-it-done-for-you version. I will examine both here. Do it yourself shoutboxes either use php to write chats or an SQL database to store and recall the chats. Chats with SQL databases require that you have access to mySQL and are able to create or access your own database. This is the preferable option, as it is more secure, but requires some knowledge. PHP shouts require less configuration but are generally slower, less stable, and less secure. Plus they require having a bunch of files permissioned to 777 (read and write by anyone) which is something I try to avoid.

Do it yourself shoutboxes

You can find a relatively complete list of free php and SQL shouts here. Many of the links are dead, but you can check out the more popular options.
____________________

Embedded Shoutboxes.
These are the options that you just insert into your webpage via an iframe of form. You get the code from the websites where the shouts are hosted, and then you paste it anywhere on your html or php page. The shouts are then run from the websites where they are hosted

Shoutbox.de (shoutbox.us): www.Shoutbox.Us
By far the most popular of the free embedded shoutboxes. Shoutbox.us and shoutbox.de are the same animal, just in English and German respectively. They run well and are a snap to configure. Definitely the best starting shoutbox for anyone since it is extremely stable and secure. They would be prone to spamming or abuse on larger websites, since there is no access control option. The service is free, though, and it is well documented and easy to use and configure. The main drawback is that the page refreshes are very slow. I believe it is once every minute, so this is definitely not a box you can use for any kind of chatting. It's more of a notification box. "Hey I am here". When I was using it, the page refreshes also drew heavy resources on some people's browsers, causing the page where the box was embedded to stick and jam. One great feature of shoutbox.us is that it is the only box that wraps single word strings of text so that it doesn't force a side scroll. This is a godsend.

Conclusion: A good, stable, free option with ads located only in the message history. Ads are unintrusive and the linkback is small. Drawbacks: slow messaging and can draw resources on some browsers.
____________________

Planet Minibox: http://www.planetminibox.com
A neat little box that features private chatting in tabs and near-instant refreshes of once every second. There is a free version with a linkback but with many of the features of the pro version. The pro version is faster and offers login and register options for the users plus the ability to add a custom avatar. This is a cheap box in alpha development. It has amazing features and potential, and could quite possibly be the first shoutbox that combines all the features of both a shout and a chat. Unfortunately, it is simply riddled with bugs and problems. I would list them here, but just imagine that pretty much every aspect is subject to problems. Wait another 6 months and try it out again.

Conclusion: May be an excellent shoutbox when it reaches beta.
____________________

Shoutmix: http://www.shoutmix.com
This is the shoutbox I am running now. It is an extremely stable and practical shout for your site. Some of the options are buried a bit, and login for your registered users is unintuitive and bizarre. But the website and the box are simply stunning. Refreshes every 6 seconds for the pro version and every 10 seconds for the free version. This would be a good free box, as its only stripdowns are 10 second refreshes and a linkback: i.e. no ads. Some people could criticize the loading of the box every 6 seconds, as it causes a line to appear in the info section of your browser. But most likely your users won't even notice. And besides, I have run shoutboxes that didn't reload the page, but which caused twice the amount of problems. This box does not affect the operation of the site it is embedded in. That is a good thing. Support is fast and helpful.

Conclusion: An excellent option for either the free or paid version. Cost is affordable and the software is stable. Control panel is a miracle of web design. Updates every 6 seconds but updates do not affect the flow of your site.
____________________

Saybox: http://saybox.co.uk
Basically a shoutbox.de clone, but half as effective. Long text strings force side scrolling, and for this you get to have their sponsored text ad below your box. Bleah.

Conclusion: Don't bother. If you want a sponsored box, at least take the shoutbox.us option with ads in the history frame instead of marking up your page.
____________________

YellBox: http://www.yellbox.com
This box promises auto refreshes when a message is posted at the price of 29.95 a year. Sidescrolling is also confined to the offending message only, as in Shoutmix. Their website and demo is so disorganized, outdated, hideous and undocumented that I can't even bring myself to try out the free version for testing.

Conclusion: This has got to get the award for the nastiest piece of software I have ever seen in my life.

If you go to den Blå Avis in Denmark or basically any other site that has used instruments, you are bound to find a handful of harmoniums. If you are interested in buying them there are a few things to know. The most important thing, as with any used item, is which things can be repaired easily, which things can be left alone and not impair normal functioning, and which things would be cost ineffective to repair.

Let's examine each category:
Things which can repaired easily or fairly easily
- Stop and stopwork
- Scratches and blemishing
- Damage to stool or cover
- Smaller cracks in casing
- Belt from pedals to bellows broken
- Stuck keys
- Some nonsounding notes

Things which can be ignored and not impair normal functioning
- Scratches and blemishing
- Chipped keys
- Damage to stool, keycover, candleholders etc.
- Small cracks or holes in casing

Things which would be cost ineffective to repair
- Major damage to casing, especially structure
- Missing or broken reeds
- Damaged or leaking bellows
- Missing keys and/or stop heads

As you can see above, nonsounding notes present the most difficulty because the difference between a permanent nonsounding note (due to a damaged reed) and a temporary nonsounding note (due to a dirty reed) is not noticeable on first play or without opening the instrument up. However, from my experience, it is fairly rare to find damaged reeds. Most nonsounding notes come from dirt and dust unless the instrument has been excessively "worked on". Therefore always:

* Ask the seller if the instrument has been messed with to the best of their knowledge and who did the messing and why.

A non-maintained instrument would likely not have any broken reeds as they don't tend to break on their own. However an instrument that has been properly overhauled would have replaced reeds anyway, but then you shouldn't be getting non-sounding notes.

Badly damaged casing is an absolute no-no. If you find large cracks or pieces that don't "fit right", then keep looking. You absolutely must have a clean decent case. This can be ascertained by visual inspection. The same goes for leaky or broken bellows. This must be avoided at all costs. They are almost impossible to patch correctly and you will be doing a disservice by buying an instrument with bad bellows. You can tell if the bellows are leaky by working the pedals and listening for leak sounds. When you work the pedals without playing any notes, you should get quite a bit of resistance in the pedals. If they just push dead down to the floor, then you have a leaky bellow. If the pedals have become disconnected from the bellows (a minor problem) then you can push the bellow with your hand to test.

Stuck keys, broken stops, and broken swellwork are generally very easy to repair and can be done by the home handyman. I have posted some pictures of such a renovation here. I will cover this in another post.

Let's look at some ads.
Let's try to see how much one can ascertain from the average ad. We will also examine some price ranges.

index.php?t=getfile&id=299&private=0
-------------
This ad says "harmonium, 12 octaves, stained, 12 octaves in porcelain with gold leafing"
Well, the owner doesn't know the difference between a "stop" and an "octave". This isn't a bad thing, as you can easily see the number of both by looking at the picture. It is a good idea to always go with an ad that has a picture. But the fact that the owner doesn't know this, indicates that they are not a musician themselves and most likely don't actually play the instrument. Also, their attentiveness to the cosmetic detailing (the stained wood and the stop condition) means that the owner is probably more interested in the instrument from a visual standpoint. This means that you are likely to find limited damage to the casing or the keywork. He or she most likely polished it and oiled it. For 300 kr. (50 us dollars) this is a very good candidate. However, if you look to the right of the keyboard, you can see that some of the keys are slightly raised. Also, the general state of the keyboard is that it is not very even. This is common with harmoniums though, as the only thing keeping them even is some felt and wood which can easily be replaced. They don't sit nearly as tightly as piano keys.

The staining was most definitely done after the fact, and I am not a great big fan of it, but some might like it. This means that someone was interested in preserving it and of keeping its value as a piece of furniture. I would visit this person and give it a play to see how the musical aspects were. Definitely worth a visit.

index.php?t=getfile&id=300&private=0
-------------
"Harmonium P Andersen 1943. Works perfectly (almost new) with receipt. Make an offer."

For 2500 (400 USD) this particular instrument is a whopper. Not exactly sure how an over 60-year-old instrument can be almost new, but this must mean it is in like-new condition. It was made by one of the major danish Harmonium makers in the middle of the century. I have an instrument almost exactly like this one, but from another maker of the same school of design and build. This instrument has a neat extended fourth octave. A small, nice instrument for the connoisseur who wants to play and not just look at it. The price may be a bit steep I think. A bid of 1500-2000 Kroner wouldn't be unreasonable, but then I would expect it to be in full working order, aside from the minor items listed at the beginning of this post that would come from years of not being played. You can see the person has it on a cardboard bottom. They know the make and they kept the receipt. Obviously this person has great respect for the instrument.

index.php?t=getfile&id=301&private=0
-------------
"Harmonium A Berntsen in perfect condition with original candleholders and newer bellow"
I tend not to trust instruments that bear the claim of having anything "newer" on them unless you know who did it. I would want to inspect these bellows thoroughly, or at least find out who had done the work and why. Are the bellows patched? Was only one replaced while the other one is rotting away? This instrument looks to have only one reed rank as well, so the asking price is a bit steep. The owner is pricing it based on appearance, which is reasonable I suppose, but when the "market" undercuts it, the seller should act accordingly.

index.php?t=getfile&id=302&private=0
-------------
Harmonium, from Joh. P Andreasen. !3 octaves. Bought at Vagn Margaards music store. Good condition with candle holders. Piano bench included.

People love the candle holders huh? Another one from Andreasen. This is one of those fascinating gems with 5 octaves (from F) and a million stops. These are lots of fun but they are heavy and can be difficult to work on. Another person confused by the octave / stop conundrum, but again not a problem. At 5000 kr (850 USD) the price is completely outrageous. Even if this person is the original owner (which he might be since he knows where it was purchased) the price leaves alot to be desired. The market would put it at no more than 2000. The presence of that fine stool, if it was original could bring it up to 2500. If this instrument has more than four reed ranks then it could be worth more. But with a single manual instrument, that is highly unlikely.

index.php?t=getfile&id=304&private=0
-------------
This is a written ad from ebay. According to the text, there is no damage to the case but the stops are disengaged ("the pull knobs don't appear to change the sound"). This is not as tragic as it sounds, as the stopwork is easy to replace and the casework is in good shape. Also, there is one nonsounding note, the highest one. This is very very common and most certainly due to dust. This instrument's problems fall almost exclusively under "things that are easy to repair". A definite candidate, provided you can try the instrument out and don't pay through the roof.

Soulseek

The best mp3 sharing p2p program available right now? Maybe torrents are better, but soulseek has tons of music. And it even caters to the people who have really nerdy musical tastes!
Well maybe not opera or classical or new country or...

Its available for OS X as well.

Dune

Great cast, weird Lynch movie, based off a classic book. What more could you want? Even Sting and Patrick Stewart are in it.

Space Odyssey 2001
Based off the Arthur C. Clarke book.

Open the podbay doors Hal...

The ending is a bit weird, but if you've read the series, it makes sense. Its funny how Hal and Dave go to that other place together...

Blade Runner (Director's Cut)

There is going to be a final cut remastered by Scott in 2007.
Again, great cast, great style.

IMHO the film is much better than the book. I never envisioned Deckard to be married or to want a pet.

I like the video mostly because Trent and co are actually performing the song, and it seems like its one take (although they probably did several).
Its interesting when he throws the mic stand and someone hands him a new one.

Now you can embed YouTube videos into any post in any forum. You can find help here. This modification took me three days, so please love it (and let me know if anything doesn't work). I will be taking down the HTML forum and moving posts into the relevant categories, since the HTML forum has always been a temporary but imperfect solution, mostly meant to accommodate YouTube embedding.

If you have any requests for a custom Tag, you can request it here. Candidates include:

ZeFrank blip TV clips
TheOnion videos

In the meantime, I will be locking all the former HTML threads not containing YouTube, since if people edit posts containing HTML the formatting will be ruined.
